Twitter and stuff

Here is a link to an article about a man who traveled 11,000 miles to New Zealand with only the help of twitterers and no extra money: How One Man Travelled to New Zealand Using the Kindness of Twitterers

You may have heard about Twitter in recent months and wondered what it is. Is it just something nerds do online? How can it be useful for me?…So I decided to provide a brief explanation of what Twitter is.

  • You can always go to twitter.com to find out what it is because they have a video and a simple presentation there, but here we go:
  • In some ways it is a social networking site, but it is not focused on creating a profile for sharing pictures or any of the stuff facebook and MySpace do.
  • You create a user name, and this allows you to post short messages of 140 characters or less. Like a simplified blog post.
  • Then you find friends on twitter and you “follow” them. That’s like adding someone as a friend on facebook. Once you follow them you will be able to see their “tweets” or posts. They can decide to follow you too and they will be able to see what you post.
  • So how is this different from facebook where you just put up your status message and people can see “what you’re doing” at the moment? Answer: you can search tweets, meaning you can search for a topic and see who else is talking about it. So if you want to know about a current even as it happens, you can search for it and see who is talking about it. Since twitter is live, someone might be at the scene of some grounbreaking press conference and they will post one tweet after another and you can read the news live, as it happens.
  • It is not as restricted as facebook. Twitter allows companies and news media and anyone with a lot of good information to tweet. So it is a great source to find out what is happening right now with a specific topic you are interested in.
  • Even though it is not as restricted and usually you can just start “following” someone (because most users don’t restrict who follows their comments), you will not get spam. The only information that will be sent to you is from twitterers that YOU decide to follow.
  • Twitter is accessible on many phones, and because it is all text it loads very quickly even over a slow connection. This also means you can leave a comment like “I will be late to dinner” so your friends can see it. It is a free version of text-messaging in a way.
  • So here is a summary: It allows you to stay connected with friends. It allows you to find new people. It allows you to be exposed to new information, live. It allows you to share ideas. It allows you to find new ideas, ones that could be profitable and make connections with people who can make you more successful or just for fun. Since you go to twitter when you want to go to twitter, it allows you to escape the information overload because you can just exit the site and you’re done.

Netbooks, what are they and what’s the big deal?

You may have heard of the new term Netbook recently as opposed to Notebook and wondered what the difference is. I have created a simple guide to what a netbook is, along with some links and a video.

  • Netbooks are usually or almost always smaller than a regular laptop or notebook computer. They are made specifically for portability. They come in screen sizes as small as 7inches, and don’t get much bigger than 12inches…if they get any bigger they become regular laptops.
  • Netbooks do not have a CD/DVD drive. But you can connect an external drive to it using a USB port.
  • Netbooks are not as powerful. They come with a small processor, the most powerful of which is an Intel Atom processor. This is meant to be a low-power, battery efficient processor. So this limits some things that one would be able to use these computers for. They are perfect for browsing the web, chatting online, using Skype (a lot of them come with webcams built in), editing word or spreadsheet documents. But the processor is not quite powerful enough to do things like heavy photo or movie editing editing, playing big video games, or using AutoCAD. But keep in mind, most people don’t do a lot of these straining applications, so Netbooks are something to consider when buying a new computer, especially if you are a person on the go.
  • All of them come with WiFi built in, and many come with built-in 3G broadband capabilities, which would allow you to browse the web almost anywhere there is a cell phone network like Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint. This is where the “Net” in Netbook comes from. These little computers are perfect for browsing the web on the go, wherever you are.
  • Since netbooks are not as powerful as laptops, the operating systems that they run are usually Windows XP or Linux, which do not tax the processor as much. Only a few netbooks run Windows Vista, but it makes the experience very slow, so stay away from Vista on a netbook.
  • Oh, and did I mention they are much cheaper than laptops? Netbooks start at about $300 and you shouldn’t have to pay more than $600-$700 for a full-featured netbook. My personal favorite and the best value is the Acer Aspire One, which retails for just $350 fully configured! (and all the tech rating websites will rate this as the best value also) Link to Acer Aspire One website: http://us.acer.com/aspireone/

iPhone OS 3.0 preview!!!

On Tuesday, March 17th, Apple held a special event to introduce us to the next iPhone operating system. This will come as an upgrade for iPhone and iPod touch owners sometime in the summer. Below is a link to a video of the presentation. Otherwise you can follow the other links for quick reviews of the new features.

This looks really amazing. They added a ton of features!
